The National N Diploma Application Process (Report 191)

Once you get your N6 certificate, you may apply for a National N-Diploma. Generally, this diploma demands some prior job experience in your field of study. For diplomas in business studies, you must have at least 18 months of relevant experience. For engineering studies diplomas, you must have at least two years of experience in the field and three years following the candidate's tertiary admission.

You'll need to apply for the Diploma through the college where you studied. Keep in mind, the college is just handling the paperwork – the Department of Higher Education and Training actually makes the final call on whether you qualify or not. They don't make exceptions when it comes to work experience, so be sure you meet their requirements. Also, they're very strict about documentation. Everything needs to be an original (unless they specifically ask for a certified copy). Don't bother with copies or faxes – they won't accept them.

Business Studies Students: If you've earned your N4, N5, & N6 certificates and have 18 months of work experience, you're eligible for a National N Diploma from DHET

Engineering Studies Students: If you've earned your N4, N5, & N6 certificates and have 2 years work experience, you're eligible for a National N Diploma from DHET

Important Information

  • Work Experience is Essential: The in-service training part of your qualification is mandatory to get the National N-Diploma.
  • DHET Makes the Final Decision: Your college helps with the process, but the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) ultimately decide if you qualify for the Diploma.
  • Prove Your Experience: The evidence you submit about your work experience needs to be detailed and directly related to your two major subjects at the N6 level.
  • Pass All Your Subjects: You must pass all subjects at all levels to be eligible for your N-Diploma.
  • Work Experience While You Study: You can start your planned work experience even if you still have outstanding subjects to complete.
  • DHET/QCTO Verify: The DHET/QCTO will do a final check to ensure your work experience meets their standards.
  • No Exceptions at Diploma Level: Condonations (passing with lower marks) might be allowed for National Certificate subjects, but not for the National Diploma.
